Server, Networking, Telecom & Battery Racks — The Complete Buyer’s Guide

Everything IT managers, OEM companies, telecom teams, and system integrators need to select, specify, and source the right rack — the first time.

IT Managers • Telecom Teams • OEMs • Integrators Updated:

Why rack selection is a system-level decision

The wrong rack doesn’t just waste money — it causes cable chaos, thermal failures, weight overloads, and integration rework. Whether you’re deploying a data center row, a telecom cabinet, a battery bank, or a network closet, the rack is the structural backbone of your entire system.

Rule of thumb: Always spec rack depth, load rating, and cooling path before specifying brand or price.
Server Racks
Data centers, IT rooms, colocation
Networking Racks
Switches, patch panels, routers
Telecom Racks
5G, BTS, outdoor, open-frame
Battery Racks
UPS, BESS, telecom power backup

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a server rack and a networking rack? +
Server racks are deeper (900–1200mm) to accommodate server chassis, with high load ratings and strong airflow management. Networking racks are shallower (450–800mm), lighter-duty, and optimized for patch panels, switches, and structured cabling.
What rack size (U) do I need for a small server room? +
For a small server room, 27U–36U is typically sufficient. Always add 25% growth buffer. A 42U rack future-proofs the installation and typically has the best cost-per-U ratio.
What is the standard rack width? +
The industry standard is 19 inches (482.6mm) internal mounting width. External cabinet width is typically 600mm or 800mm. Telecom uses ETSI standards which may differ.
What rack do I need for outdoor 5G / BTS equipment? +
Outdoor telecom deployments require IP55 minimum (IP66 recommended), hot-dip galvanized or SS316L frame, UV-resistant coating, forced-air ventilation or integrated HVAC, and cable entry glands with IP-rated seals.
How much weight can a standard rack hold? +
Networking racks: 100–500kg. Server racks: 700–1500kg. Battery racks: 1000–3000kg+. Always verify rail load rating independently from total frame capacity.
What coating is best for battery racks? +
Acid-resistant epoxy powder coat is standard. For VRLA batteries, an acid-proof coating on shelf surfaces and the base is mandatory. Stainless steel SS304 is used for high-corrosion environments.
What documents should come with my rack order? +
At minimum: inspection report, material traceability certificate, CoC (certificate of conformance), drawing revision reference, and packing / stacking photos for export orders.
Can you manufacture racks to custom dimensions? +
Yes — Eterna Global Solutions manufactures custom rack heights, depths, widths, and configurations for OEM, telecom, and BESS applications. Submit an RFQ with your requirements.
